THE F2 Logistics Cargo Movers played a solid game in front of a Cebuano crowd to carve out a 25-21, 25-19, 25-14 victory over the valiant Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) All-Star Volleyball Team in a friendly-game at the University of San Carlos (USC) Main Gym yesterday.
The Cesafi All-Star squad, though, played determined as they gave the 2016 Philippine Super Liga (PSL) All-Filipino champion F2 Cargo Movers a run for their money.
The F2 Cargo Movers took all the three sets but not without the resistance from Cesafi All-Star, which is composed of players from five universities in Cebu.
Dij Rodriguez scored an ace to give Cesafi All-Star a 7-6 lead in the first set but the F2 Cargo Movers answered with a 6-0 run to turn things around with a 12-7 edge.
Cesafi All-Star retaliated with a 5-1 blitz to bring down the lead to one, 12-13, before F2 Movers racked up four straight points to bring the lead again to five, 17-12.
The Cesafi All-Stars showed a fierce defense that brought them closer, 22-18, before Abigail Maraño and Kim Kianna Dy put on the finishing touches of the first set, 25-21.
The second set was the closest one, which saw eight deadlocks. The Cesafi All-Star led thrice. Dyan Darantinao scored from off the blockers followed by error from F2 Cargo Movers to give Cesafi a 10-9 lead.
It did not take long for the F2 Cargo Movers to answer as they scored four straight spiked with Maraño’s ace to regain the lead, 13-10.
The Cesafi All-Star answered the visiting team and was able to make it 14-all before Janelle Cabahug scored plus one stop from the defense for a 16-14 advantage.
The last deadlock was 16-all before the F2 Cargo Movers broke away with team captain Cha Cruz and Bryan Kennedy connecting strong hits to take the second set, 25-19.
The third set was dominated by F2 Cargo Movers, who started strong with 4-0 and had a string of runs anchored by Fritz Joy Gallanero, Kim Fajardo, Dy, Mary Joy Baron and Kennedy to win the first match in three sets.
F2 Cargo Movers coach Ramil de Jesus applauded the local smashers for giving a good showing against a commercial team.
“I was amazed by the kind of level of play showed by Cesafi players, naka sabay sila sa level ng semi-pro team. There’s definitely good potentials from the Cebuanos,” said de Jesus, a 10-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) champion coach.
Cesafi All-Star head coach Grace Antigua said that her ward showed a great performance despite the team being formed and playing together for only two weeks.
“Nindot ilang performance. The players are blending on the court. I hope mas nindot pa ilang work inside the court on the next game,” said Antigua.
After the game, the Cebuano fans were treated to a Meet and Greet from the F2 Cargo Movers.
The Cesafi All-Star and F2 Cargo Movers will face off the second time at 5:30 p.m. today at the same venue. (RSC)
