USPF Panthers banks on all-Filipino line-up, youth on their side this season
A panther is an elusive, powerful, and incredibly intelligent animal. The University of Southern Philippines Foundation holds tight the identity of their school banner, the panther, stressing their determination to achieve a spot in CESAFI Season 19 basketball competition.
The USPF Panthers aim to reach at least the semi’s this season. In an interview, USPF Panthers coach Alan Cabatingan, shared their motivation every time his team plays.
“Ang amoa lang gikuan sa mga bata kay we will focus on our defense and ang offense mo follow lang (The only thing I tell the team is that we will focus on our defense, and offense will surely follow),” he said.
The USPF will have an all-Filipino lineup this season. Coach Alan is also confident of the youth of his team. “Sa pagkakaron kay amoang team kay more on young man,” he said.
Last season, the USPF Panthers pulled off a historic upset against University of the Visayas Green Lancers. This win, the very first by the Panthers over the Lancers in the league’s 18-year history, was dedicated by head coach Brian Jereza to forward Edward Villarta, who had a surgery for a fractured orbital bone.
In the recently concluded Partner’s Cup, USPF Panthers snatched their first win, conquering University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars in a hard-fought game. It was a see-saw battle with the Jaguars defending their court to the very end.—Abbygail Ariola, CESAFI Media Bureau
